What is ARP?

Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is a protocol for mapping an Internet Protocol address (IP address) to a physical machine address (MAC address) that is recognized in the network.

ARP provides the protocol rules for making this correlation and providing address conversion in both directions.

Why is this a problem?

The hardware defect or virus/worm generates tens or hundreds of thousands of meaningless replies per day. This traffic can impair performance for the user of the affected machine and other customers nearby.

Furthermore, many devices with this defect on the same network segment can disrupt operations or, in some cases, cause temporary outages.

If you are using a device that is creating high ARP traffic, please take action to repair this problem immediately.

Important Information Regarding Your High-Speed Internet Service

You may have received a letter from Charter instructing you to visit this web site.

We are contacting you because a problem has been detected that is affecting your High-Speed Internet connection, as well as the connections of other customers. A computer or router connected to the cable modem on your account is sending thousands of invalid ARP REPLIES to the network daily.

To prevent an interruption to your service, you must resolve this issue as soon as possible. If the problem persists and you do not take action within ten (10) days from the date of the letter you received, Charter may temporarily suspend your Internet service until the problem is repaired.

These invalid replies disrupt network performance. Charter's Acceptable Use Policy explicitly prohibits system disruption. Specifically, Section 8 states:

NO SYSTEM DISRUPTION - Customer will not use, nor allow others to use the Service to disrupt Charter's network or computer equipment owned by other Charter customers. Any static IP address must be authorized and provisioned by Charter. Customer also agrees that Customer will not use, nor allow others to use, the Service to disrupt other Internet Service Providers or services, including but not limited to e-mail bombing or the use of mass mailing programs.

Please refer to this information to correct the problem:

1. Router Defect
If you are using a router or wireless router, please verify your model. If you are using one of the models listed below, the firmware installed on that router may be defective. If your router is not listed below, go to your manufacturer's web site and check if a firmware upgrade is available for your model router.
Linksys® Models Affected Needs Firmware Version (or higher)
BEFSR41 v3 1.05.00
BEFSR81 v3 2.50.2
BEFVP41 v2 1.01.04
BEFW11S4 v4 1.45.3
Click here for instructions about how you can check the firmware version on your router and update the firmware, if necessary.

2. Check Your Computers for Worms or Viruses
Follow these 3 steps to ensure that all of your computers are secure:
  • Install a Personal Firewall
  • Keep Your Operating System Up to Date
  • Use Antivirus / Anti-Spyware Software
